Orthodontics is the study and treatment relating to restoration of normal tooth position and jaw relationships.
Orthodontics is not very well developped in veterinary medicine as its principal use is for esthetic reasons.
However, certain cases of malalignment can cause occlusion problems which in turn causes a pet to struggle to feed himself or may cause injury.
The most common treatment is the repositionning of the inferior canines (which are positioned too much towards the tongue) as these can damage the soft palate. A simple treatment can be carried out when the pet has finished growing, to maximise comfort and ensure he is eating properly.
